The fire, whose "origin is unknown", is "now extinguished", the prefecture said in a statement. The fire broke out shortly after 3am (0200 GMT) in a seven-storey building in Vaulx-en-Velin. Au moins 10 personnes sont mortes, dont cinq enfants âgés entre 3 et 15 ans, dans un violent incendie ce vendredi 16 décembre à Vaulx-en-Velin, dans la banlieue est de Lyon en France, a annoncé la préfecture du Rhône.

Le bilan provisoire fait également état de quatre victimes en urgence absolue et de 10 blessés légers (dont deux sapeurs-pompiers). 15 personnes sont dans un état d’urgence relative, rapporte également le parquet de Lyon, repris par l’AFP. La préfecture a activé un centre opérationnel départemental ainsi que le plan « nombreuses victimes ».
